Ancient Log Discovery Boosts Idea of Burying Wood to Fight Climate Change Guess what scientists just dug up? A super old log that’s nearly 4,000 years old! This amazing find is giving new hope to a cool idea called “wood vaulting,” where people bury wood to trap carbon and help save our planet.

Trees are like superheroes that suck up bad gases from the air. But when they die, they let all that yucky stuff back out. That’s a problem! So scientists thought, “Hey, what if we hide the wood underground?” But they weren’t sure it would workâuntil now. Professor Ning Zeng and his team were digging around in Quebec when they found a log buried deep in the ground. It was so well-preserved that it hadn’t let go of much carbon at all! Only about 5% in almost 4,000 years. How cool is that? The secret? The log was buried in special clay soil that keeps out air, bugs, and fungi. That means the wood doesn’t rot, and the carbon stays put.
This discovery shows that if we bury wood the right way, we can lock up carbon for a really long time. And guess what? We can still use the land above for farming, parks, or even solar panels! Plus, we can use wood that’s leftover from fires, old furniture, or building scraps. Professor Zeng is super excited and says this could help us fight climate change. Isn’t science awesome? Maybe one day, burying wood will be a big part of how we keep our Earth healthy!
