Instagram's Edits app offers advanced editing tools like AI animations and green screen, competing with CapCut.
Highlights
  • Edits app launched globally on iOS and Android platforms.
  • Offers advanced AI editing; no watermark on exports.
  • Supports video capture up to 2K at 60 fps.

Instagram (owned by Meta) has just released a new app called “Edits,” a standalone video editing tool designed specifically for content creators. According to TheVerge, the app was first announced in January and is now available worldwide on both iOS and Android devices. Instagram head Adam Mosseri is behind this launch, which appears to be a direct competitor to TikTok’s popular CapCut editing app.

What Makes Edits “Creator-Focused”?

When Instagram calls Edits “creator-focused,” they mean it’s built for people who make videos as part of their work or hobby, not just casual users. Think of it like the difference between professional kitchen tools and basic home cooking equipment.

Unlike regular video apps that focus on quick, simple edits, Edits offers advanced tools without using templates. This encourages makers to create original content rather than following pre-made patterns.

Key Features That Stand Out

  • AI-powered tools – The app includes smart features that can automatically create animations and effects
  • Green screen replacement – This lets you change your background to anything you want, like TV weather presenters do
  • Subject cutouts – A tool that can separate you from your background with a few taps
  • High-quality video – Records up to 2K resolution at 60 frames per second (meaning smoother, clearer videos)
  • No watermarks – Videos can be exported clean without the app’s logo
  • Performance tracking – See how well your videos are doing after posting

Global Reach

Edits is launching globally. It’s available almost everywhere Instagram works, except China. iOS users in 120 App Store regions can download it now, while Android users in 90+ regions will get access by May 2025. The potential reach is huge – about 1.74 billion Instagram users could access the app.

How to Get Started

To use Edits, you simply download it for free from your app store and sign in with your Instagram account. Future updates will include tools called “keyframes” (which let you precisely control changes in your video) and collaboration features so you can work with other creators.

This launch shows Instagram’s commitment to helping video creators make professional content across different platforms, not just for Instagram itself. By offering these tools without cost or watermarks, they’re giving creators more freedom while keeping them in the Meta ecosystem.
