According to LatestLY, Infosys has laid off 240 entry-level trainees on April 18, 2025. These trainees failed to pass internal assessments at the company’s training center in Mysuru. The IT giant is offering one month’s salary, travel allowance, and free upskilling programs to help these trainees find new jobs.
Infosys is one of India’s biggest IT companies. It was started in 1981 by seven engineers in Pune. Today, it has offices in more than 50 countries and employs over 343,000 people. The company helps other businesses with computer services, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. Infosys is worth about $91 billion (about ₹7.6 lakh crore) and made around $19.11 billion (about ₹1.6 lakh crore) in the third quarter of this financial year.
The laid-off trainees did not meet the passing marks in Infosys’ foundation training program. Think of these assessments like final exams that test if trainees are ready to work on real projects for customers. Infosys is helping these trainees by giving them:
- One month’s salary as compensation
- Travel allowance to return home
- Free training programs with well-known companies NIIT and UpGrad
- Professional help to find new jobs
- Chance to apply for different roles at Infosys BPM (Business Process Management)
The assessment process at Infosys is quite strict. Here’s how it works:
- Trainees must score at least 65% to pass
- They get three chances to pass the tests
- Tests cover basic IT skills like Java programming and database management
- In 2024, the tests became harder, with 30-40% of trainees failing
- If someone fails all three attempts, their contract allows Infosys to let them go
This is not the first time Infosys has laid off trainees this year. In February 2025, the company let go of another group of trainees who also failed assessments. Infosys is extending the same support programs to those earlier trainees too. In total, over 300 trainees from both layoffs can now access these free upskilling opportunities.
The free training programs offered are very helpful for the trainees’ future careers:
- NIIT programs teach important IT skills like Java programming and data science
- UpGrad offers a 12-week training in Business Process Management (BPM)
- After completing the BPM training, trainees can apply for jobs at Infosys BPM Limited
- These programs help trainees learn new skills that many companies are looking for
- All training is completely free for the laid-off trainees
These layoffs come at a time when Infosys is facing some financial challenges. In the fourth quarter of financial year 2024-25, the company’s net profit dropped by 11.7% to ₹7,033 crore. This drop happened even though their revenue grew by 7.9% to ₹40,925 crore. The profit fell because clients are spending less money, some projects got delayed, and Infosys is spending more on artificial intelligence technology. It’s like earning more money but having higher expenses, so you save less at the end.
Looking ahead, Infosys expects slow growth of only 0-3% in the next financial year because of these market challenges. While the company says the layoffs were specifically because trainees failed tests, they also help reduce costs during this difficult time. For the trainees affected, the free upskilling programs offer a second chance to build their careers in the IT industry, either back at Infosys or with other companies.
